Producers

Whether you are a rank amateur or an aspiring professional there are some basic things you need to know about the adult industry when coming into it that you will rarely get to read anywhere as it is not the sort of thing people really want to know, preferring to just get ones end away and think of what to do with the results later.
All too often I hear stories from potential new producers moaning about the exorbitant fees being asked for and from performers who think a certain producer is taking the piss with demands so hopefully I will help give you some insight on the basics to make your life at entry level less painful and hopefully not as expensive to smooth your way in a bit by taking the following on board.
Amateurs might want to note that if they plan on publishing their work or even seling it to a third party company or even use it on their own website, you will need a model release signed by the performer(s) on the day backed up by two forms of id which are invariably government issued and recognised in the form of a current passport and a driving licence. Make sure both names match up. I normally photograph the performers holding both ids in a very tight shot so the focus is sharp and you can see all the details. Companies buying your product will be rightfully difficult if this inportant piece of documentation is out of focus
To my understanding, the new 2257 regulations indicate that owners of material from 2008 onwards must also have on record copies of sexual health tests, though I’m sure this is not mandatory it is best to practice this from now as better to have it now than need it in the future when it will be difficult to acquire.
A very important rule to adopt in the event a performer forgets any essential piece of paperwork is not to pay them a penny because if you do, you wont see their arse for dust as they would have your money and wont be bothered. No matter how much they promise they will honour this, I can guarantee you will be running through hoops to get it. If you don’t pay them then they will quickly get it sorted.
Believe me. I know. I’ve been there.
Another problem area is what to pay models. I’ve heard some ridiculous fees quoted by models trying it on because they’ve never heard of me therefore assume I’m some kind of mug that’s been in the game all of two minutes grateful to see them naked and the worse part of it is, just because the last producer paid them the requested fee, therefore, so should you.
My response is usually very mild. Thanks but you are outside of my price range. They usually come back after they’ve ebeen in the industry a bit and know who you are.
The going standard rates of pay as of 2008 are £250- £300 for girl on girl £300 for straight £350 for anal £400 for double pentetration. Stud fees depending on experience of the performer can range from £100 – £150 for amateur £250- £300 for a pro perfomer depending on who it is and what you expect of them on the day.
In some cases you need to get a location release signed but this is more for big companies like The Adult Channel and TVX and not really a standard requirement, though if you plan to release something you shot in a public place and release it on the UK market you may need to prove you didn’t break the UK laws by supplying proof to the BBFC who normally accept a letter with contact details where it canbe verified if necessary.
One of the most important things to recognise is the validity of sexual health documents STD and HIV. As a rule, do not accept photocopies unless you can verify from the clinic it originated from that the person in front of you was tested there. Sometimes this can be hampered by the data protection act when trying to obtain such information so best to have the person with you to verify this.
Some people have been known to work outside of their test periods by doctoring up paperwork on photoshop or some other image programme on a computer simply because they do not want to pay for another test or whatever reason that spurs them to have flagrant disregard for the health of their colleagues in the industry as well as their own health.
Another thing worth taking on board is your people skills. Always be up front with models by telling them exactly what you want. If you are a shy type of person then you will not get what you set out for and usually you will be faced with models who run rings around you and not deliver what you asked for but yet demand the same money for doing less.
If you are too arrogant, you will find this will get around the adult community faster than a bush fire earning you a reputation of being difficult to work for. Just remember the adult community like any other business shares information among all those who participate in it.
Generally speaking, if a producer has been in the business for awhile and no one really hears anything about them then itstands to reason they are ok. Some producers become notorious for one reason or other and it doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad to work for but it means to be fore warned is to be fore armed with the info for dealing with that person.
The fees mentioned above arethe standard going rate but whatever you agree with the performer(s) is really between you and them.
Just remember if you pay too little and do not travel expenses you will earn yourself a reputation for being a tight wad and will find it difficult getting talent to work for you and if you are in the habit of cancelling shoots then models may not take you serious at all, opting to go with the next job that comes up in favour of yours.
In short, say what you mean and mean what you say and stick to it
